The saga surrounding the future of Edinson Cavani’s future at PSG is just not about to come to an end as his proposed move to Atletico seems to have run into murky waters.
It may be the case that Edinson Cavani is extremely keen to sign for Atletico Madrid and that Diego Simeone really wants the Uruguayan striker to come, but Paris Saint-Germain don’t want to let their reliable 32-year-old frontman depart midway through the season.
It’s not a financial issue, as it’s purely a sporting one for the French club.
Money isn’t really an issue for PSG, even though they risk losing Cavani for nothing in the summer when his contract expires.
All they’re thinking about right now is the 2019/20 campaign and they don’t want to strengthen a club they view as a direct rival for the Champions League, while they want to keep Cavani as they hunt trophies in the second half of the campaign.
Mauro Icardi may have displaced the Uruguayan in the starting line-up, but the directors at the Parc des Princes know the season is a long one.
They see no reason to lose a reliable goalscorer six months earlier than they have to.
For Atletico Madrid, this is frustrating as Diego Costa is currently injured and Alvaro Morata is currently the only fit striker available.
If they have to wait until the summer for Cavani then it could be a very difficult second half of the campaign for Los Rojiblancos, while there would also be more competition for the striker in the summer as Chelsea and Manchester United could be interested.
