Sir Alex Ferguson, who is expected to watch the game from the directors’ box, said he had been overwhelmed by the flood of supportive messages during his recovery.
He also told MUTV that:
“It’s going to be a bit emotional for me when the game gets started and things like that.”
“It had to happen sometime. I’ve been looking forward to it. The important thing was getting the right time and the right rest before I came to a game.
“It was unbelievable. There were thousands of cards. They kept arriving at Salford Royal Hospital and of course I’d left by that time, but they kept coming.
“The number of emails and texts and personal cards to the house, it really was amazing. I was overcome by it.”
