Serena Williams “zoomed” into the final of the 2018 US Open in the early hours of Friday as she thrashed Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. Williams, seeded 17th now has the chance to add to her 23 Grand Slam titles for the first time since the birth of her daughter Olympia last year.
She defeated the 19th-seeded Latvian, who was playing in her first Grand Slam semi-final, in just 66 minutes.
Williams will now face the winner of the other semi-final match between the 14th-seeded Madison Keys and 20th-seeded Naomi Osaka in the final.
On her way to the final of the 2018 US Open, Williams defeated not only the eighth seed Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals, but also Kaia Kanepi, the unseeded player who had earlier on caused the upset of the tournament when she sent the top seed Simona Halep packing in the opening round.
She also had a completely dominant performance over her sister, Venus Williams, in the third round.
Serena returned to tennis shortly after the birth of her child and has been successful for certain, with some great matches and an appearance in the Wimbledon final on top of her accomplishments at the US Open. Finishing the year on a high note with a US Open win will surely be a very good “icing on the cake” for her and the fans.
