If there is one female player that will make headlines at the on-going 2018 US Open, it just has to be the queen of tennis herself, Serena Williams.
Oh yes, she gave birth to her baby recently and is not back at her peak form but when it comes to the US Open, you can bet that she will do everything within her power to impress her teeming fans not only with her play but also her outfits.
Recently, some French Open officials criticised her outfit to their competition, an act that drew lots of angry tweets directed at the officials by tennis fans all over the world.
So what is the tennis diva’s response to all of that?
She simply came out for her US Open comeback in a custom one-shouldered tutu dress. Williams won her first match of the tournament, beating Poland’s Magda Linette 6-4, 6-0 at the Arthur Asher Stadium in New York City.
The tutu black dress is the product of a collaboration between Off-White and Louis Vuitton menswear designer Virgil Abloh and Nike. It’s part of Abloh’s new Off-White x Nike collection inspired by Williams, which is aptly called “QUEEN.”
Abloh had this to say concerning the the player and the outfit:
“With Serena, we have one of our generation’s most powerful, inspiring athletes as the muse, I was trying to embody her spirit and bring something compelling and fresh to tennis,”
“Willing to design dresses for her for life,” Abloh posted on Instagram.
“I feel like if and when, or if they know that some things are for health reasons, then there’s no way that they wouldn’t be okay with it. So I think it’s fine,” and added that when it comes to fashion, “you don’t want to be a repeat offender.”
The tennis diva however has a lot of support on the issue of her outfits. Especially on the social media.
“Serena Williams was told she wasn’t allowed to wear her Black Panther catsuit back to the French Open because she had to ‘respect the game’’. So she showed up in a tutu,” one person wrote on Twitter.
“You can’t wear a catsuit to play? OK, I’ll go with a tutu and fishnets then. @serenawilliams is the role model even big girls needed. Williams is unflappable, even in a tutu,” another fan of hers wrote.
Yet another one wrote: “They didn’t let Serena Williams wear her catsuit. She came out in a tutu. Yes Queen.”
Interestingly, Serena’s first game of the 2018 US Open competition was watched by many celebrities which included the Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, former boxer Mike Tyson, actors Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra-lee Furness.
And of course, her husband, Alexis Ohanian.
