A mouth-watering encounter awaits all lovers of European football in a few hours’ time as the current European Champions, Real Madrid takes on their local rivals, Athletico Madrid in a game that decides who goes home with this year’s UEFA Super Cup.
Both teams are used to playing against one another not just in the LaLiga but also at the European Cups Competition level.
They have played each other in a UEFA Cup Final in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League. However, this will be the first time in the history that a UEFA Super Cup final is being played between two sides from the same city.
The venue of this match is the Lillekülla Stadium in Estonia.
The defending champions, Real Madrid are of course favourites to retain the trophy despite the fact that they are now without their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, who has since moved on to Italian soccer giants, Juventus F.C.
Real Madrid have a good pre-season generally as they won games comfortably against teams like Juventus and AS Roma. Their only loss came in their earlier match against Manchester United.
Athletico Madrid did not have the best of pre-season games but that counts for nothing when they are up against a team like Real Madrid.
Such matches have never failed to live up to their explosive billings. These two teams are real great rivals to one another no matter in which competition they are participating in.
As far as team news are concerned, the Real Madrid Manager has taken “the whole family” to Estonia. He did not leave anyone at home.
His starting line-up is likely going to consist of the usual faces apart from Ronaldo. Even though the younger players have of late shown how ready they are to take over from their more experienced colleagues in the team, we are likely to going to see the likes of Benzema, Bale and Ansensio (the BBA) in a three-pronged attack.
The midfield is the area where some changes may be made due to the fitness level of some players like Luka Modric and Casemiro. Both are likely to play from the bench. Kroos will have to be in charge with some other players for the first half of the game.
The defence is expected to have the usual guys in place. The same four of Marcelo, Ramos, Varane and Carvajal who performed really well in their last match against A.C. Milan and look ready to do same for the final.
The goalkeeper is also likely to be unchanged for now despite the fact that Thibaut Courtois has arrived and has started training sessions with the team.
Keylor Navas is presently in a great form and will very likely be starting between the goal posts for Real Madrid in this final.
