It is surely going to be a cracker of a match later this evening at the Old Trafford as Manchester United take on Tottenham Hotspurs in a Premier League fixture that promises to be very explosive as both teams are giants in the league and will go all out to get the three points at stake.
That is where the comparison ends, however.
Both teams are going through very different situations at the moment. While the home team is in a state close to disarray due to internal squabbles, the other team is just having fun together as a collective. The difference is very clear for all to see.
While at United, everybody is reading all sorts of meaning into whatever statements are made by either Paul Pogba or Jose Mourinho, the situation at Tottenham is such that the manager, Mauricio Pochettino was being asked to thrust his fingers towards his eyes and imitate Alli’s latest goal celebration. That is how relaxed the atmosphere at Tottenham is in comparison to that of United.
Interestingly, both players whose names appear above are surely going to play very decisive parts in the game tonight and the result may just depend on their individual outputs.
Both are box to box players who can change game patterns and have match-winning capabilities. The only major difference for now is the fact that Pogba might be playing as his side’s captain while Alli will be without a captain’s arm band. That however will in no way take the shine off any of these two gladiators once the match is underway.
Moving on from the talk about the duo, Tottenham’s camp is not as exactly as serene as they will want people to believe right now.
And this is as a result of wayward behaviour of no other person than the team captain himself, Hugo Lloris. He might likely not feature for the team in today’s game after being charged with drink driving.
The chances of the captain taking part in this evening’s game are very remote as the manager, Pochettino will have to take a decision on his No 1 goalkeeper and captain after he got arrested on Friday for drinking and driving.
It is surely a sad time for the captain who has been quite impressive for his team but has now let them down albeit outside the field of play.
Tottenham has a bubble to burst at Old Trafford and this is probably the best opportunity to correct the situation – they have lost on their last four visits to Manchester United and also failed to score.
When Pochettino was reminded of this issue, he simply replied:
“There are many negative things but you need to believe and I believe more than ever that we can win. We’re winners.”
“The winners sometimes lose but if your attitude is right, you’ll win more than you lose. We’re working hard. After four years, we still need to improve, winning at some clubs away from home, like United.”
Manchester United is still smarting from last weekend’s 3-2 loss to Brighton and will surely be looking to bounce back and manager Jose Mourinho is prepared for a tough game.
“It’s always difficult after you lose a match, especially for people who really care about the job and about being football professionals,” says Mourinho. “But after that, you think about the next match.
“Of course it will be a difficult match – it’s against a team that finished in the top four last season.”
Team News for Tottenham Hotspurs have it that Victor Wanyama has resumed training with the team but will not be available for selection at Old Trafford, while Juan Foyth is continuing his rehabilitation. Of course, Heung-Min Son is not be available as he is playing in the Asian Games with South Korea.
At the Manchester end, Nemanja Matic, Antonio Valencia and Alexis Sanchez have been training with the first team this week and are likely to make it to the game, even though Mourinho said there are “still decisions to be made”.
New arrival Diogo Dalot has also joined his new team-matches on the training field, although is not likely to feature in tonight’s game.
