Manchester United lost their Champions League game against highly rated Juventus at Old Trafford on Tuesday after Paulo Dybala scored what proved to be the winning goal as early as the in the 17th minute to make it a winning return to his former team for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Juventus clearly dominated the game as they showed the stuff they are made of in a match that they could have won by more goals but for the solid performance of De Gea in goal for the hosts.
Both teams started the game in attack mode as Dybala headed a good chance wide before former Juve team mate, Paul Pogba did virtually the same minutes later by wasting an aerial chance of his own at the other end when he nodded a free-kick from Ashley Young straight at Wojciech Szczesny.
Cristiano Ronaldo then got involved in Juventus first goal as he sent in a right-wing cross that ran into Paulo Dybala’s path for the striker to score his fourth Champions League goal of the season in the 17th minute of the game.
De Gea in goal for Manchester United was his team’s saving grace as Juventus immediately went in search of a second goal. The goal-keeper denied Joao Cancelo before making a double save, blocking a well taken Ronaldo free-kick and then saving from Blaise Matuidi on the rebound.
This trend of events continued early in the second half of the game as De Gea made another wonderful save high to his left to keep out Ronaldo’s thunderous effort, while the hosts continued to struggle to keep pace with the visitors.
This almost paid off as Paul Pogba got close to getting the equaliser when his 75th-minute strike hit the woodwork and bounced clear off the diving Szczesny, but the Serie A champions held on to their slim victory to the end of the match.
With this result, Juventus has maintained a 100 per cent record in the group and are sure to qualify for the next stage of the competition while Manchester United will have to overcome Valencia and Young Boys to progress.
