It took Lionel Messi only three days of observing Sergio Busquets’ style of play at training sessions for him to be impressed by the Barcelona B graduate. This is coming from no other person than someone who knew both players very well – Pep Guardiola himself.
Sergio had been playing under Guardiola in the Barcelona Reserves Team until the coach was appointed as the manager for the first team in the 2008 – 2009 season.
Luckily for him, the coach decided to take him along to the main team.
The 30-year-old Busquets has since gone on to develop into a very solid midfielder and an integral part of Barcelona’s first team. He has so far won seven LaLiga titles and three Champions League crowns among numerous other trophies in his time at the Nou Camp.
He has also developed to be a regular in the National Football Team itself.
In those days of his coming into the main stream of the team, Messi quickly liked what he saw from the new graduate during the training sessions and told the manager about it. This is how Guardiola put it:
“I remember what Messi told me,”
“After two or three days of training with him, he came to me and said, ‘I like this one’. And I said, ‘When there is trouble, he will be there’.”
Guardiola then went on to add his own observation of the then young player as he said :
“He does everything for those around him.”
