Lionel Messi is the best ever but Modric is this year’s best – Rakitic.

11th September, 2018.

He plays alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona F.C. and also plays with Luka Modric in the Croatian National Football Team. He is more than qualified to tell the world about these two great players as far as footballing issues are concerned. We are talking about no other person than the majestic midfielder himself – Ivan Rakitic.

He has been speaking to the press about the two colleagues of his in relation to the issue of the World Best Footballer Award. And this is his humble opinion:

While it is true that Lionel Messi is surely the greatest player of all-time but 2018 is the year of Luka Modric.

It is a fact that after Modric was awarded UEFA’s Player of the Year award, he has also been named on the three-man shortlist for FIFA’s version of the award. This is no doubt as a result of the fact that he was instrumental in helping Real Madrid to a third successive Champions League title before reaching the World Cup final with Croatia.

FIFA shortlisted former Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah alongside Luka Modric and controversially overlooked Barcelona superstar and five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.

Rakitic has no doubts whatsoever about the Barcelona talisman’s standings in the game but he believes that Modric – who won the World Cup Golden Ball – is deserving of this year’s honours.

“There are seasons that you can be better or not,” Rakitic told reporters ahead of Croatia’s Nations League clash against Spain on Tuesday.

“For me in general the best player of the world and maybe the greatest of all time is Leo Messi. It’s easy, you take a boy, and nine of 10 boys are gonna say the same.

“But I think it was the year of Luka, sincerely, I think it’s something that Leo and all the people know, he [Modric] deserves all the awards.

“Sincerely if he received the award of the best European player… I don’t know what he has to do to be the best player of the world, with all he did.

“I don’t need to help him as a good friend of his as I’m, he made everything by himself, nobody gave him anything. For me it’s clear that it has to be Luka [for The Best award].”
