For sometime now, ardent followers of Barcelona Football Club have been nursing fears that with the way things are going at the club presently, the team’s captain may just get fed up and leave.
As it stands right now, their fears may have been justified as the captain has now decided to stall talks on a contract renewal
The Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has reportedly decided to delay contract negotiations with Barca until the end of the year.
Lionel Messi, whose contract runs until June 2021, has decided to wait until the end of this year to make a final decision on his future, something that is said to have troubled Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
However, according to reports, this situation may not be unconnected with the recent happenings at the club which are not exactly palatable to the Barca captain.
There are rumors that Messi’s recent spat with some management staff and some related issues may have played a role in his decision to delay negotiations, as well as recent happenings within the club as far as results and transfer issues are concerned.
The captain is not exactly happy with the recent recruitment strategy of the club as well as some utterances coming from the management concerning the loyalty of his team mates.
For Barcelona fans, these reports will represent something of a concern since the Argentina international remains a talismanic figure at the Camp Nou and the finest footballer on the planet in the eyes of those associated with the Blaugrana.
If Lionel Messi decides to leave Barcelona, it would have more than a footballing effect, though. Around the stadium and indeed the city of Barcelona itself the forward’s face is emblazoned, while jerseys read his name and number.
The Argentinian soccer star has established himself as a deistic figure during his time at the football club.
Barcelona fans will be hoping he continues to forge that reputation over many years to come. Subsequently, an expiry date of 2021 on his current deal is surely a little too close for comfort for some fans.
Right now, some other teams have the power to match Messi’s release clause and offer him a lucrative salary and so, the management of Barcelona needs to be very careful at this point in time.
Even though Messi has stated his wish to sometime in future to don the jersey of Newell’s Old Boys once again, it’s difficult to imagine the mercurial player putting on the colours of any European team other than the Blaugrana or the club wanting to move him on.
One thing is definitely certain. It will surely be a major surprise if the forward decided not to extend his stay in Catalonia.
