Even though F.C. Barcelona has always been regarded as favourites anytime any day in the Champions’ League Competition, this year’s edition has been really favourable to the Spanish giants right from the beginning and this trend has continued as the draws were made on Friday.
From the draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Champions League, Barcelona have been pitched against Manchester United, and on progression, could face either Liverpool or Porto in the semi-finals. On the other side, Ajax take on Juventus, and Manchester City face Tottenham.
A very positive aspect of the draw for the Catalans is the fact that Ernesto Valverde’s team have avoided two of the competition’s co-favourites in City and Juventus, and have a very good chance of making the final on June 1 at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.
In the other group, Juventus are certainly favourites against Ajax, who sensationally defeated Real Madrid in the Round of 16, and will play the second leg at the Allianz Stadium.
The way things stand at the moment, they have everything in their favour to make it to the semi-finals. Even though the Dutch side sprung a surprise in the last round, things are a whole tougher against the Bianconeri.
As far as Manchester City is concerned, they face an interesting duel with fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs.
It will be recalled that last season, City fell at the quarter-final stage against another English team, Liverpool, and will hope history doesn’t repeat itself.
The final quarter-final pits Liverpool against Porto with the winner taking on the winner of the Barcelona vs Manchester United clash. Jurgen Klopp’s men are clear favourites, though Iker Casillas, Pepe and Eder Militao will be tough to breakthrough.
