It was a glorious opening for the refurbished stadium as the owners, the Enyimba Football Club “baptised” it with qualification for the quarter-final phase of the CAF Confederation Cup after they secured a hard-earned 1-0 win over Congolese team, CARA Brazzaville, on Wednesday evening to the joy of its teeming supporters.
The Aba International Stadium had only recently been finally approved by CAF for its matches after it had undergone a comprehensive renovation and the team was playing its first game there in 3 years.
The match was virtually over before the Elephants finally got the decisive goal that progressed them in to the quarter-final stage of the competition.
The goal was scored by Wale Alalade who came into the game as a substitute. It was his shot which came off Mfon Udoh’s freekick in added time that earned Enyimba the much needed maximum points to win the group and qualify for the last eight.
By virtue of this lucky win, Enyimba won the group on 12 points, while CARA finished runners-up with nine points after Williamsville of Cote d’Ivoire could only manage a goalless draw in Abidjan with bottom team Djoliba of Mali.
Enyimba will now face Rayon Sport of Rwanda in the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal.
Their last opponents, CARA will face the Group D winners USMA of Algeria, who beat Gor Mahia from Kenya 2-1 in their final group game earlier today.
