Cristiano Ronaldo has come out to deny a 2009 rape allegation against him and described it as “fake news”. He did so as he took to Instagram Live today (Sunday 30th September, 2018) to debunk the claims made against him by one Kathryn Mayorga.
The Juve soccer star went on to add:
“They want to promote my name. It’s normal. They want to be famous to say my name, but it is part of the job. I am a happy man and all good.”
This response from Ronaldo became necessary as a result of a report in German magazine Der Spiegel which quoted 34-year-old Kathryn Mayorga as saying that Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room nine years ago.
It was further alleged that the soccer star went on to reach a $375,000 settlement with Mayorga in 2010 in exchange for agreeing to never go public with the allegations. Now, her lawyers are reportedly attempting to void the non-disclosure agreement.
Ronaldo meanwhile has been quoted as saying that he did have sex with the lady but that it was consensual.
The player’s lawyers have in the meantime released a statement calling Der Spiegel‘s reporting “blatantly illegal” and declaring that they will seek “moral damages in an amount corresponding to the gravity of the infringement, which is probably one of the most serious violations of personal rights in recent years.”
