Barcelona’s injury challenges and how they are likely to line up against Sevilla

5th October, 2019

It is surely a top of the billing match in Spain as Barcelona take on Sevilla in a La Liga game on Sunday in their final fixture before the second international break of the new campaign.

The Catalonian side will be missing some key players due to injury and suspension and so in this post, we will concentrate on taking a look at who and who may be featured against Julen Lopetegui’s men in this all-important match.

Starting with the Barcelona defensive section, Clement Lenglet is suspended for this match, while Samuel Umtiti, Junior Firpo and Jordi Alba are all injured and not expected back in time for the game.

Consequently, it is very easy to know what the defence will be looking like for this clash. Sergi Roberto and Nelson Semedo will continue on the flanks, while Gerard Pique and Jean-Clair Todibo will start in central defence.

The team coach has decisions to make over his midfield where Arturo Vidal will be hoping he has done enough to play his way into the team’s starting XI

Vidal really played a key role for the club after replacing Sergio Busquets in midweek in the Champions League but is yet to start a game for Barca this season.

As it stands right now, it looks as if Busquets, Frenkie de Jong and Arthur have emerged as Valverde’s favoured midfield trio, while Ivan Rakitic and Carles Alena on the other hand, have barely had a look-in.

As far as the attack is concerned, Barcelona’s challenges in that area are gradually easing with the return of the duo of Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembele back to full fitness, although Ansu Fati remains on the sidelines.

All of that means that Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez look the players most likely to be in the starting XI, leaving Dembele to vie with Antoine Griezmann for the final spot in the attack.

Barcelona’s Possible XI for this match:

Ter Stegen; Roberto, Pique, Todibo, Semedo; De Jong, Busquets, Arthur; Messi, Suarez, Griezmann.
