If anyone thought the Barcelona’s interest in the services of Neymar Jnr. is over, then such persons may just have to think again. Barcelona is still very much interested in signing the Brazilian star.
The signing of Neymar remains top priority for Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu and the side are keen to reinforce with the Brazilian still an option.
Barcelona have recognized the need to reinforce their playing squad in most areas and with Bartomeu’s mandate coming to an end in 2021, the president is keen to finish with a title and believes Neymar could be key.
The main issue will be money. ESPN has reported that any deal could cost around 150 million euros, whilst other sources have put it around 180 million euros.
Apart from a transfer fee, Neymar would also demand a substantial wage. He would be looking to earn around 70 million euros a year, a significant increase for a club which already has a huge wage budget.
The cost of any deal involving Neymar could also influence the other potential transfers at the club.
Barcelona clearly need a striker and Lautaro Martinez is the top target but at 110 million euros, it would be unlikely he would come if Neymar did too.
The other, more reasonable option, might be Timo Werner. The German is having a great season at RB Leipzig and is much more affordable at 60 million euros.
Barcelona aren’t just looking for strikers, they also need a new centre-back.
It’s seen as being a vital reinforcement. Samuel Umititi’s performances have been sub-par, whilst Gerard Pique is now entering the latter stages of his career.
The club are also looking for two new full-backs on both sides, and midfield reinforcements. Although any new signings in the middle of the park would depend on the future of Carlos Alena, currently on loan at Betis.
