For most fans of the US Open Tournament, there is one match they will never get tired of watching. They simply long to see this kind of game and luckily for them all, that is the match on the cards later today – the Venus Williams vs Serena Williams game.
Past matches between the two sisters have never failed to live up to expectations and that is the reason fans love such match-ups. The record of their past meetings shows that the younger Serena holds an advantage over her senior sister, having won 17 games as against 12 victories for Venus.
Today, they face each other in a third round clash of the US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows in a match that promises to be as exciting as usual.
“At least this time it will be fair.” laughed Venus, with reference to last year’s Australian Open final when Serena was pregnant with daughter Olympia.
She then added humorously:
“The last time we played [in a Grand Slam] it was two against one.”
The records show that the two sisters are meeting for the 30th time today with Venus winning the 29th at Indian Wells back in March. This game is also the earliest they have had to faced each other at a major since their first match two decades ago. Between them, the two sisters have won a combined 30 Grand Slam singles titles.
At an interview, Serena had this to say about today’ game:
“It’s obviously a tough match. It’s so young in the tournament,”
“It’s not the end of the world. We would have rather met later but we’re both going to come out per usual and do our best.
“We make each other better. We bring out the best when we play each other. I think we’re used to it now.”
She went on to add: “I never root against her, no matter what.”
“So I think that’s the toughest part for me. When you always want someone to win, to have to beat them. I know it’s the same thing for her.”
In order to reach this stage of the competition, sixteenth seed Venus, 38, defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova and Camila Giorgi to reach the third round, while Serena, seeded a position lower, knocked out Magda Linette and Carina Witthoft without dropping a set.
